The Fêtes de Bayonne, one of Europe's largest popular gatherings, kicked off on July 10, 2024, with a poignant ceremony.
Mayor Jean-René Etchegaray paid tribute to Patrice Laniès, a local resident who tragically died during last year's festivities after confronting a group of revelers.
The incident led to seven individuals being charged with murder.
Despite the somber start, thousands gathered for the opening, though attendance may decrease this year due to scheduling conflicts with the Olympics and Pamplona's festivities.
Security remains tight with 900 law enforcement and emergency personnel deployed to ensure safety during the five-day celebration.
