C8 Loses Broadcasting License Amid Controversy

Published: 2024-07-24

The French audiovisual regulator, Arcom, has decided not to renew the broadcasting license for C8, a channel owned by Vincent Bolloré, due to repeated violations of broadcasting obligations.

This decision follows a series of sanctions against C8, including a record fine of €3.5 million earlier this year for offensive remarks made by host Cyril Hanouna.

While C8 faces the loss of its frequency, CNews, another channel under Bolloré's control, has managed to retain its license.

The decision has sparked mixed reactions across the political spectrum, with some praising the move as a step towards upholding media pluralism, while others, including members of the far-right, decry it as censorship.

C8 has faced 31 sanctions since its acquisition in 2012, highlighting a troubling trend in its programming.
