Climate Change Forces Ski Resorts to Close

Published: 2024-10-12

The ski resorts of Grand Puy and Alpe du Grand Serre in the French Alps are closing due to the impacts of climate change.

Both resorts have struggled with a lack of snow, leading to financial losses and decreased visitor numbers.

The Grand Puy resort, located between 1,370 and 1,800 meters, saw a significant drop in skier days from 17,000 in 2013-2014 to just 6,000 in 2023-2024. A local referendum confirmed the closure, with plans to shift towards eco-friendly activities like fishing and trail running.

Meanwhile, Alpe du Grand Serre, after 85 years of operation, faces closure as local authorities ended funding for its ski lifts.

Efforts are underway to raise funds and explore sustainable economic models to save the resort, but the future remains uncertain.

These closures are part of a broader trend, with over 180 ski areas in France shutting down since the 1970s due to similar challenges.
