Controversy Over France's 2025 Education Budget

The French government's 2025 education budget, presented by Education Minister Anne Genetet, has sparked controversy among educators and unions.

Despite claims of unprecedented funding levels, the budget remains largely stable at 63 billion euros, with only a slight increase from the previous year.

Critics argue that the budget is more of a political maneuver than a genuine investment in education, as it includes significant job cuts.

The plan involves reducing 4,000 teaching positions, primarily through retirements and non-renewals, affecting primary schools the most.

The ministry justifies these cuts by citing a demographic decline, with 97,000 fewer students expected in 2025. However, unions are not convinced, pointing to ongoing issues like overcrowded classrooms and insufficient support for students with disabilities.

The government plans to hire 2,000 additional aides for disabled students, but this move has not quelled the dissatisfaction among educators, who continue to demand better conditions and resources.
