In the Pays de la Loire region, a wave of protests has erupted following the announcement of severe budget cuts to cultural funding by regional president Christelle Morançais.
The proposed cuts, which could reach up to 73%, have alarmed cultural workers and artists, who fear for their livelihoods.
On Monday, around 3,200 people gathered in Nantes to voice their opposition, carrying signs that read "Culture is not a luxury" and "Artists in struggle.
" The cuts are part of a broader plan to save 100 million euros, exceeding the 40 million euros reduction requested by the national government.
Key cultural events and institutions, such as the La Folle Journée music festival and the Julien Gracq House, face significant financial losses.
Critics argue that these cuts threaten the region's vibrant cultural scene, which is crucial for tourism and local identity.
