Far-Right 'Patriots for Europe' Emerges as Third-Largest EU Group

Published: 2024-07-09

A new far-right alliance, 'Patriots for Europe', has become the third-largest group in the European Parliament.

Initiated by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on June 30th in Vienna, the group is now led by Jordan Bardella of France's National Rally.

With 84 MEPs from 12 countries, it surpasses the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group.

The alliance includes parties like the Dutch Freedom Party, Spain's Vox, and Italy's League.

They oppose military support for Ukraine, reject 'illegal immigration', and advocate for 'traditional family values'.

This marks a significant shift in European politics, as it's the first time a far-right group has achieved such prominence in the EU Parliament since its inception in 1979.
