In a stunning turn of events, France's far-right National Rally (RN) party has emerged as the frontrunner in the first round of legislative elections held on June 30, 2024. Led by Marine Le Pen, the RN secured 33.15% of the vote, outpacing the left-wing New Popular Front alliance at 27.99%.
President Emmanuel Macron's coalition, Renaissance, suffered a significant setback, landing in third place with just 20.76% of the votes.
The elections, called after Macron dissolved the National Assembly following a poor showing in European elections, saw an unusually high turnout of 66.7%.
With 297 constituencies favoring RN candidates and no party securing an absolute majority, France faces an unprecedented political landscape as it heads into the second round.
