France-Algeria Tensions Over Immigration

French Prime Minister François Bayrou has called for a reassessment of immigration policies amid rising tensions with Algeria.

Following a tragic knife attack in Mulhouse, allegedly committed by an Algerian national who had been denied repatriation multiple times, Bayrou announced an audit of France's visa issuance policies.

He also urged Algeria to review bilateral agreements, including the 1968 accords, which he claims are not being respected.

While emphasizing France's desire to avoid escalation, Bayrou warned that failure to address these issues could lead to a reevaluation of the agreements.

The government is also planning stricter border controls and enhanced surveillance to combat illegal immigration.
