France Battles Triple Livestock Epidemic

Published: 2024-09-15

France's livestock industry is grappling with an unprecedented health crisis as three viral diseases simultaneously threaten sheep and cattle.

The resurgence of the bluetongue disease, particularly the new serotype 3, has seen cases nearly triple in a week, affecting 22 departments, primarily in the northeast.

This serotype, first detected in the Netherlands, is spreading rapidly across France, with 1,929 cases reported by mid-September.

Alongside, the epizootic hemorrhagic disease has also emerged, compounding the challenges for farmers.

These diseases, transmitted by midges, do not affect humans but have severe implications for animal health and farm economics.

In response, the French government has ordered millions of vaccines to curb the outbreaks, providing them free to affected farmers.
