France Boosts Defense Amid Budget Strain

Published: 2025-03-06

France is ramping up its military spending in response to shifting global dynamics, including reduced U.

S. support for Ukraine and growing European defense needs.

Currently allocating 2% of its GDP to defense, the government plans to increase this to between 3% and 3.5%, despite a significant public deficit.

The move aligns with a broader European push to rearm and support Ukraine, as Russia's military spending surges to 10% of its GDP.

French officials, including Economy Minister Eric Lombard, emphasize the need for "peace-focused" economic strategies, though this may require tough budget cuts or tax hikes.

The 2024-2030 military budget, already set at €413 billion, reflects this urgency, marking a one-third increase from the previous plan.

France faces the challenge of balancing these defense priorities with its strained finances.
