France Braces for Heavy Rainfall and Storms

Published: 2024-10-15

The southern half of France is bracing for heavy rainfall starting Tuesday evening, October 15, as the remnants of ex-hurricane Leslie, now a tropical storm, approach from the Iberian Peninsula.

This comes just days after the passage of storm Kirk.

The French weather service, Météo-France, has issued an orange alert for rain and flooding in the Lozère and Gard departments, warning of a "cévenol episode," a type of intense rainfall affecting the Cévennes region.

Rainfall is expected to be particularly heavy, with accumulations reaching up to 250 millimeters in some areas by Wednesday evening.

The storm will bring not only rain but also strong winds, especially in the Hérault, Gard, and Ardèche departments.

As the week progresses, the rain will spread to the western half of the country, raising concerns about potential flooding in the south.

Only the Côte d’Azur and Alsace regions are expected to see some sunshine over the weekend.
