France Expands AI Surveillance Post-Olympics

Published: 2024-10-02

France is set to expand the use of algorithmic video surveillance, a technology that was successfully trialed during the Paris Olympics.

This advanced surveillance system, which utilizes AI-enhanced cameras, is designed to detect fires, abandoned objects, crowd movements, and potential threats without employing facial recognition.

The French government, led by Prime Minister Michel Barnier, supports the broader implementation of this technology, citing its effectiveness in maintaining public safety during the Olympics.

The system is currently authorized until March 2025, with plans to extend its use.

Additionally, this technology is being adopted by supermarkets to combat shoplifting, offering a significant reduction in theft-related losses.

While the technology is praised for its efficiency, it remains under strict legal regulations to protect individual privacy rights.
