France Faces Heatwave Housing Crisis

Published: 2024-08-23

France is facing a severe heatwave, prompting Météo-France to issue a red alert for four departments, including Rhône, effective from August 22. A report by the Abbé Pierre Foundation highlights that over half of the French population has experienced excessive heat in their homes, with a 26% increase in such cases since 2013. The report warns that many homes are becoming uninhabitable during prolonged heatwaves, with vulnerable groups like the elderly and low-income families being the most affected.

Despite the urgency, current renovation policies do not prioritize adapting homes to withstand extreme heat.

The foundation calls for integrating heatwave adaptation measures into state-subsidized energy renovations and suggests a "grand heat" plan to protect the homeless.

With climate change intensifying, the need for immediate action is critical as more regions will face abnormal heat days by 2050.
