France Sets New Olympic Gold Record

Published: 2024-08-11

France has set a new record for gold medals at the Paris 2024 Olympics, surpassing their previous best from the 1996 Atlanta Games.

The 16th gold was clinched by taekwondo athlete Althéa Laurin, who triumphed in the over 67 kg category.

Laurin's journey to gold is remarkable, having initially intended to pursue karate before a mix-up led her to taekwondo.

Her victory at the Grand Palais was celebrated by a crowd of spectators, marking her as the first French Olympic champion in taekwondo.

This achievement adds to her impressive record, including a world championship title in 2023. France's overall performance at the Games has been strong, with the volleyball team also securing a gold medal, while the women's handball team and other athletes contributed silver medals.
