France Targets Corsican Mafia

The French government has taken a bold step in addressing organized crime in Corsica.

During a special session of the Corsican Assembly on February 27, Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin announced the creation of a specialized unit in Bastia to combat mafia activities.

This marks the first official acknowledgment of a mafia presence in Corsica by the state.

Darmanin also revealed plans to remove Corsican individuals from the Fijait, a database for terrorist offenders, to avoid conflating them with Islamist terrorists.

The move has been welcomed by Corsican nationalists and local leaders, with Gilles Simeoni, President of the Corsican Executive Council, calling it a significant political moment.

These measures are part of a broader effort to tackle criminal networks and restore trust in the justice system on the island.
