France Tests 'Digital Pause' in Schools

Published: 2024-09-06

In France, nearly 200 middle schools are taking a bold step to enhance student focus and reduce bullying by implementing a "digital pause.

" This initiative, led by former Education Minister Nicole Belloubet, requires students to deposit their phones at the school entrance, retrieving them only at the end of the day.

The move aims to build on the 2018 law banning phones in schools, addressing ongoing issues of distraction and harassment linked to mobile use.

Despite the existing ban, students often find ways to use their phones, particularly in restrooms.

The "digital pause" is seen as a more stringent measure to ensure compliance, with plans for broader implementation by January 2025. However, the initiative has sparked debate, with some educators and unions questioning its effectiveness, arguing that the real issue lies in phone use outside school premises.
