The French left-wing coalition, known as the New Popular Front (NFP), has chosen Communist Party veteran André Chassaigne as their candidate for the presidency of the National Assembly.
The election, set for Thursday, July 18, is seen as a crucial test of parliamentary alliances following inconclusive legislative elections.
Chassaigne, 74, a respected figure across party lines, will face competition from incumbent Yaël Braun-Pivet of the presidential camp, as well as candidates from other political groups.
The NFP hopes Chassaigne's experience and reputation will help attract votes beyond their coalition.
This election is particularly significant as it could indicate the potential for forming a government majority in the deeply divided assembly.
