French Politics: Coalition Puzzle After Elections

Published: 2024-07-08

The French National Assembly faces a complex political landscape following recent legislative elections.

No party secured an absolute majority, with the New Popular Front leading at 178 seats, far short of the 289 required.

The former presidential majority holds 156 seats, while the National Rally has 142. This situation necessitates coalitions for passing laws, a rarity in the Fifth Republic.

A broad alliance from non-Mélenchon left to right, including Macron's party, could reach 347 seats.

However, the New Popular Front currently rejects this idea.

Other potential coalitions, such as the National Rally with part of the right, or the ex-presidential majority with Republicans, would fall short of a majority, leading to minority governments.
