Glaciers worldwide are melting at an unprecedented pace, with Europe’s Alps and Pyrenees among the hardest hit.
A recent study in Nature reveals that these glaciers have lost 40% of their mass in just 25 years.
Globally, glaciers are shedding 273 billion tons of ice annually since 2000, equivalent to three Olympic swimming pools per second.
This rate has surged by 36% in the last decade, with 2023 marking a record loss of 548 billion tons.
The melting glaciers, vital for water supply and agriculture, are also accelerating sea level rise and destabilizing mountain regions.
Scientists warn that this trend mirrors the escalating climate crisis, urging immediate action to curb global warming.
