In a historic move, the French National Assembly's bureau has deemed a proposal to impeach President Emmanuel Macron as "receivable," allowing it to proceed to further debate.
This marks the first time such a proposal has passed the bureau's scrutiny, largely due to the left-wing alliance, Nouveau Front Populaire, holding a majority in the bureau.
Despite the proposal's slim chances of success, as it requires a two-thirds majority in Parliament, it represents a significant political maneuver by La France Insoumise (LFI).
The proposal will be debated in the law commission and potentially in a public session.
LFI's Manuel Bompard expressed optimism, highlighting the unprecedented nature of the event and the 300,000 signatures supporting the initiative.
However, the proposal faces opposition from the majority camp, the right, and the National Rally, making its adoption unlikely.
