Massive Wildfire Rages in Hérault

Published: 2024-08-18

A massive forest fire erupted on Sunday, August 18, near Gigean in the Hérault region, burning over 300 hectares of pine forest.

The blaze, which started around 3 PM, is advancing towards the Gardiole massif, prompting the evacuation of several homes.

Over 500 firefighters, including reinforcements from Bouches-du-Rhône, are battling the flames with the aid of two Dash planes, five Canadairs, and three helicopters.

The town of Frontignan, with a population of 24,000, has activated its emergency plan, evacuating residents and opening a sports hall for those displaced.

The fire's proximity to the A9 motorway and strong winds complicate efforts to control it.

Access to several massifs in the region is restricted due to the high fire risk, and Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin plans to visit the site on Monday.
