Delphine Labails, the mayor of Périgueux, France, has announced a temporary withdrawal from her duties due to professional burnout.
The 49-year-old socialist, who has served since 2020, cited health and family balance concerns as reasons for her decision.
Labails highlighted the intense demands of her role, particularly in a mid-sized city, and the additional challenges faced by women in politics.
Her first deputy will take over during her absence.
This announcement comes amid a broader trend in France, where many mayors report high stress levels, with 83% saying the job harms their health.
Critics, including her predecessor, argue that Labails' approach to her role contributed to her exhaustion.
