Protests Erupt Over High-Speed Rail Project

Published: 2024-10-14

In Lerm-et-Musset, France, a significant protest against the proposed high-speed rail line between Bordeaux and Toulouse took place, drawing between 800 and 1,500 participants.

The demonstrators, including environmentalists and radical activists, oppose the project due to its estimated €14.3 billion cost and environmental impact, which could affect around 5,000 hectares.

The protest, organized by the LGV Non Merci collective and Les Soulèvements de la Terre, saw tensions rise as a police vehicle was damaged and equipment stolen.

Despite the unrest, the event also featured peaceful activities like a forest walk and the construction of a wooden observation post.

Authorities conducted searches following the protest, seizing numerous items and making several arrests.

The project, while supported by some regional authorities, faces strong opposition from local communities who advocate for upgrading existing rail lines instead.
