Rising University Costs Strain French Students

Published: 2024-09-04

The cost of attending university in France has become a significant burden for students, as highlighted by the latest report from the Fédération des associations générales étudiantes (FAGE).

The average expenses for a non-scholarship student enrolled in a bachelor's program have risen to €3,157 for the 2024 academic year, marking a 4.4% increase from 2023. This financial strain is exacerbated by rising living costs, with housing alone consuming 45% to 50% of a student's budget.

The report reveals that nearly 20% of students struggle to afford adequate nutrition, as they are forced to prioritize rent over essential needs.

Despite the government's efforts to adjust tuition fees in line with inflation, the overall financial pressure on students continues to grow, making higher education increasingly inaccessible for many.
