Socialists Reject Macron Impeachment Threat

Published: 2024-08-19

The French Socialist Party, led by Olivier Faure, has dismissed the idea of supporting a motion to impeach President Emmanuel Macron, a threat posed by the leftist party La France Insoumise (LFI).

Faure emphasized that the Socialist Party prefers a vote of no confidence over impeachment if Macron appoints a Prime Minister not aligned with the left.

LFI, led by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, accuses Macron of undermining democracy by ignoring the legislative election results and threatens to use constitutional means to remove him.

However, the impeachment process is complex, requiring a two-thirds majority in both the National Assembly and the Senate, making it unlikely to succeed without broader support.

The disagreement between the Socialist Party and LFI highlights divisions within the left-wing coalition, the Nouveau Front Populaire, which seeks to have Lucie Castets appointed as Prime Minister.

Macron's decision on the new government leader remains pending, with consultations scheduled with political leaders.
