Strasbourg's Liberation: A Historic Commemoration

Published: 2024-11-24

On November 23, Strasbourg commemorated the 80th anniversary of its liberation with a symbolic flag-raising ceremony at the cathedral.

This act mirrored the daring ascent by Maurice Lebrun in 1944, who scaled the 142-meter spire amidst ongoing battles to hoist the French flag.

The original flag, crafted by local Emilienne Lorentz from a Nazi banner, is now a cherished exhibit in Strasbourg's historical museum.

This event highlights the enduring legacy of the Second Armored Division's role in liberating Strasbourg, a pivotal moment in France's fight for freedom.

Meanwhile, the Struthof concentration camp, the only one on French soil, also marked its liberation anniversary, reminding us of the atrocities faced by over 50,000 detainees during the Nazi occupation.
