Telegram CEO Faces Legal Turmoil in France

Published: 2024-08-31

Pavel Durov, the CEO of Telegram, has been embroiled in legal challenges in France, facing charges related to organized crime and a separate investigation for alleged child abuse.

Durov, who was arrested and later released under judicial supervision, is accused of failing to prevent the spread of criminal content on Telegram, a platform with over 900 million users.

Additionally, a new investigation has been launched concerning serious allegations of violence against one of his children in Paris.

Despite these controversies, French President Emmanuel Macron has defended the decision to grant Durov French citizenship in 2021, citing his contributions to innovation and global influence.

The naturalization was part of a strategy to attract eminent foreigners, although it has sparked debate given the current allegations against Durov.

The legal proceedings continue as French authorities coordinate with Swiss counterparts regarding the child abuse claims.
