Tensions Emerge in New French Government

Published: 2024-09-24

In the newly formed French government under Michel Barnier, early tensions have surfaced between the Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau, and the Minister of Justice, Didier Migaud.

Retailleau, representing the right-wing Les Républicains, has called for stricter penal policies, advocating for swift and firm sentencing, drawing inspiration from the Dutch model.

This stance has clashed with Migaud, a former socialist deputy, who emphasizes the independence of the judiciary and questions the perception of leniency in the justice system.

The ideological divide between the two ministers was evident during their simultaneous interviews on French television, where they publicly aired their differing views.

Despite these early disagreements, both ministers have expressed a willingness to engage in dialogue to address their differences.
