A tragic incident unfolded on September 3rd when a small boat carrying migrants sank off the coast of Cap Gris-Nez, resulting in the deaths of at least 12 individuals, including 10 women and 6 minors, mostly of Eritrean nationality.
This marks the deadliest incident in the region since November 2021. The French Interior Minister, Gérald Darmanin, emphasized the need for a renewed migration agreement with the UK, highlighting the inadequacy of current funding to manage such crises.
Despite rescue efforts, only 51 of the 65 passengers were saved, with some in critical condition.
The incident underscores the perilous conditions faced by migrants attempting to cross the English Channel, often in overcrowded and unsafe vessels.
