On Christmas Eve, a 52-year-old TGV train conductor tragically ended his life by jumping from his moving train near Crisenoy, Seine-et-Marne.
The incident caused significant disruptions on the South-East line, delaying trains by up to five hours, but no passengers were harmed thanks to the automatic safety systems in place.
The SNCF confirmed that the Vacma system, which ensures driver vigilance, functioned perfectly, stopping the train immediately.
The conductor, a long-time SNCF employee and union activist, had shared personal struggles on social media prior to the event.
Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot described the incident as a "human tragedy" but faced criticism for his remarks about the potential risks.
An investigation is ongoing, and psychological support has been offered to affected colleagues and passengers.
