Ursula von der Leyen Re-elected as EU President

Published: 2024-07-23

Ursula von der Leyen has been re-elected as the President of the European Commission, securing 401 votes in the European Parliament.

This marks a significant improvement from her narrow victory in 2019, where she won by just nine votes.

Her re-election comes amid a challenging political landscape, with rising far-right sentiments and a fragmented coalition.

Von der Leyen's success is largely attributed to the crucial support from the Green party, which provided 45 votes in her favor.

In her acceptance speech, she emphasized the need for a strong Europe in uncertain times and reiterated her commitment to ambitious climate goals, including a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. However, she faces the challenge of maintaining unity among diverse political factions within the EU.
