Wauquiez Declines Ministerial Role in Barnier's Government

Published: 2024-09-20

Laurent Wauquiez, leader of the Republican Right group in the French Assembly, has declined a ministerial position in the new government led by Prime Minister Michel Barnier.

Wauquiez, who was offered the role of Minister of Economy and Finance, chose to remain at the helm of his parliamentary group, emphasizing his commitment to a true right-wing policy.

Despite stepping back from a ministerial role, Wauquiez announced that the Republicans will hold nine positions in Barnier's government, including key roles such as Bruno Retailleau as Minister of the Interior.

Wauquiez's decision reflects his strategic focus on ensuring the new government breaks from past policies and meets the expectations of the French public.

This development comes as Barnier's government formation is closely watched, with hopes of a significant political shift after years away from power for the right-wing parties.
