Barnier Faces First Censure Motion

Published: 2024-10-08

French Prime Minister Michel Barnier is set to face his first motion of censure in the National Assembly, initiated by the left-wing alliance, the Nouveau Front Populaire (NFP).

The motion, which is unlikely to succeed without the support of the Rassemblement National, aims to challenge Barnier's appointment by President Emmanuel Macron, who bypassed the left's preferred candidate, Lucie Castets.

The NFP criticizes Barnier's political orientations, particularly his refusal to repeal the pension reform.

This censure motion marks a significant political test for Barnier, who has been navigating a delicate balance between breaking from Macron's methods and maintaining political continuity.
