French Assembly Faces Motion of Censure

Published: 2024-09-10

In a politically charged atmosphere, the French National Assembly is set to witness a motion of censure against the newly appointed Prime Minister, Michel Barnier.

The motion, spearheaded by La France Insoumise (LFI) and its national coordinator Manuel Bompard, aims to challenge Barnier's government, which is seen as a continuation of President Emmanuel Macron's policies.

Despite Barnier's attempts to form a broad-based government, including reaching out to left-wing parties, the socialists and other left factions have refused to join, citing ideological differences.

The motion of censure is scheduled for early October, with Bompard calling on all deputies, including those from the far-right, to support it.

Barnier, who lacks a clear majority in the Assembly, faces a significant challenge in securing enough support to sustain his government.
