France Redefines Sexual Consent Laws

Published: 2025-04-02

French lawmakers have taken a significant step by adopting a bill that redefines sexual assault, including rape, as any non-consensual sexual act.

The proposal, passed with 161 votes in favor and 56 against, aims to shift the focus from the victim's behavior to the perpetrator's actions.

Supporters argue it addresses gaps in current laws, such as cases involving victims in a state of shock.

Critics, however, fear it could lead to undue scrutiny of victims during investigations.

The bill also clarifies that consent must be free, informed, and revocable, and cannot be assumed from silence or inaction.

While the measure has sparked debate, it sends a strong message about prioritizing consent in French law.

The Senate will now review the proposal.
