France's Math Struggles Persist

Published: 2024-12-04

France's performance in mathematics and science remains poor, as revealed by the 2023 Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS).

The country ranks at the bottom among European Union members, with French students in CM1 and 4e scoring below the OECD average.

Despite efforts to improve math education, results have stagnated since 2019. A significant gender gap persists, with boys outperforming girls by 23 points in CM1, a disparity that has widened since previous assessments.

This gap is attributed to gender stereotypes affecting girls' confidence in math.

Additionally, socio-economic disparities are stark, with an 81-point difference in math scores between the most and least advantaged students in CM1, equating to nearly two years of educational lag.

These findings highlight France's struggle with educational inequality.
