France's Retirement Reform Faces Repeal

Published: 2024-11-28

In a significant political move, La France insoumise (LFI) is set to present a proposal to repeal the controversial retirement reforms enacted under Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne.

The proposal, scheduled for debate on November 28, aims to reduce the retirement age from 64 to 62 and decrease the required years of contribution from 43 to 42. This initiative has sparked a heated debate within the French political landscape, particularly between LFI and the Socialist Party, which originally supported the 2013 Touraine reform.

Despite internal disagreements, the Socialist Party has decided to back the repeal, prioritizing the reversal of Borne's reform.

The proposal has already gained traction in the commission of social affairs, with support from both left-wing parties and the Rassemblement National.

If successful, the repeal will be further discussed in the Senate in January, marking a pivotal moment in France's ongoing retirement policy debate.
