Starting October 1st, the speed limit on Paris's ring road, the Périphérique, will be reduced from 70 km/h to 50 km/h.
This decision, announced by Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, aims to reduce pollution and noise for the 500,000 residents living nearby.
However, the move has sparked significant political debate.
Critics, including former Transport Minister Clément Beaune, argue that the measure is premature and lacks state validation.
The Périphérique, a major urban thoroughfare, is used by 1.2 million vehicles daily, with 80% of drivers being non-Parisians.
Despite opposition, Hidalgo insists the city has the authority to enforce this change, though the implementation may face challenges due to state control over traffic enforcement measures.
