Sarkozy Awaits Key Court Decision

Published: 2024-12-18

The French Court of Cassation is set to rule on Nicolas Sarkozy's appeal in the "Bismuth wiretapping" case.

The former president was convicted in 2023 of corruption and influence peddling, receiving a three-year sentence, including one year under electronic surveillance, and a three-year ban from public office.

Sarkozy's defense argues that the use of wiretapped conversations with his lawyer violates his rights, citing a 2016 European Court of Human Rights ruling.

If the appeal is rejected, Sarkozy plans to take the case to the European Court of Human Rights.

A rejection would also make his conviction final, while an acceptance could lead to a new trial.

This case is one of several legal battles Sarkozy faces, including allegations of illegal campaign financing.
