Telethon 2024: A Turning Point in Genetic Research

Published: 2024-11-30

The 38th edition of the Telethon, a major fundraising event in France, has raised over 32 million euros in pledges as of November 30, 2024. This year's event, which started earlier than usual due to the reopening of Notre-Dame de Paris, is spearheaded by singer Mika and features over 23,000 activities across the country.

The Telethon is at a pivotal moment, with promising advancements in gene therapy for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a disease that affects one in 3,000 boys in France.

Five children have already benefited from a pioneering treatment that has shown significant muscle regeneration.

The event also highlights the success of a pilot program for spinal muscular atrophy, which has saved the lives of several infants.

Despite these breakthroughs, the need for substantial funding remains critical to continue this vital research.
