Unrest Erupts in Martinique Over Activist's Arrest

Published: 2024-11-14

Rodrigue Petitot, known as "Le R," a prominent figure in the movement against high living costs in Martinique, was arrested on Tuesday, sparking significant unrest.

Petitot, leader of the Rassemblement pour la protection des peuples et des ressources afro-caribéens (RPPRAC), was detained following allegations of trespassing and intimidation against public officials.

His arrest led to riots and looting in Fort-de-France, with protesters demanding his release.

The unrest saw clashes with police, resulting in three officers injured and multiple arrests.

The situation has been tense since September, with ongoing protests against the high cost of living, leading to widespread violence and property damage.

The visiting Minister of Overseas Territories, François-Noël Buffet, has expressed willingness to engage with all parties involved.
