Far-right RN falls short in French legislative elections

Published: 2024-07-08

The Rassemblement National (RN), France's far-right party, faced disappointment in the recent legislative elections.

Despite high expectations, the RN secured only 135 to 143 seats in the National Assembly, falling far short of the 289 needed for an absolute majority.

This result places them as the third-largest group in parliament, behind Ensemble! and the New Popular Front.

The party's strongholds in the north, northeast, and southeast of France delivered some victories, with 133 RN candidates confirmed for parliamentary seats.

However, the outcome was a significant blow to the party's ambitions, as they had hoped to form a government and force a cohabitation with President Macron.

The mood at the RN's election night gathering was somber, with supporters expressing shock and disappointment at the unexpected setback.
