In a stunning turn of events, the far-right Rassemblement National (RN) has achieved a clean sweep in the Gard department during France's 2024 legislative elections.
The RN, which previously held four out of six constituencies, now controls all six seats in the National Assembly from this region.
This includes a victory by Sylvie Josserand in Nîmes, defeating Nicolas Cadène, a left-wing candidate known for his stance on secularism.
Cadène, formerly associated with the Socialist Party and a vocal advocate for a more inclusive interpretation of laïcité, secured 48.6% of the vote against Josserand's 51.4%.
The Gard's voter turnout was notably higher than the national average at 68.15%, signaling strong engagement in this political shift.
