In France, the Court of Accounts has proposed a shift in childcare policy to address the growing challenges in the sector.
With public spending on childcare reaching 16.1 billion euros in 2022, the Court suggests focusing on parental care and extending maternity leave by a month to alleviate the demand for childcare services.
This approach could free up 35,000 childcare places and reduce public expenditure.
The report highlights the unsustainable nature of current funding, which heavily favors crèches, the most expensive childcare option.
Additionally, the Court recommends better compensation for parental leave to address the shortage of early childhood professionals.
As many childminders approach retirement, the need for reform is urgent to ensure adequate childcare availability across the country.
