French Legislative Elections: High Turnout and Strategic Withdrawals

Published: 2024-07-06

France's recent legislative elections have seen unprecedented voter turnout and strategic maneuvering.

With participation levels not seen since 1997, the first round on June 30th resulted in numerous potential three-way races.

However, over 200 candidates, primarily from the left and center, withdrew to block the far-right National Rally (RN) party.

This strategy appears to be working, with polls suggesting RN may secure 170-210 seats, far from an absolute majority.

The New Popular Front could win 145-175 seats, while President Macron's coalition might shrink to 118-148 seats.

The high stakes and intense campaign have sparked record numbers of proxy votes and increased participation from French citizens abroad.
