Historic Floods Devastate Southeast France

Published: 2024-10-18

Southeast France has been hit by unprecedented floods, with the Ardèche region experiencing a record 600 millimeters of rainfall in just 48 hours.

This extreme weather event, described as unprecedented by the Minister of Ecological Transition, Agnès Pannier-Runacher, has led to widespread damage and evacuations.

In Givors, the Rhône, streets and parking lots were submerged, forcing the evacuation of a hypermarket and leaving many stranded.

The A47 highway remains closed as emergency services work to clear the water.

Across the affected regions, over 900 people have been evacuated, and thousands of firefighters have been deployed to manage the crisis.

Although the red alert has been lifted, 18 departments remain on orange alert for potential floods and heavy rain.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, with no casualties reported so far.
