A deadly knife attack in Mulhouse, France, has left one person dead and five municipal police officers injured, two of them critically.

The assailant, a 37-year-old Algerian man, was known to French intelligence for his radicalized views and was under an obligation to leave the country.

Despite ten requests from French authorities, Algeria refused to accept his return.

The attack occurred during a demonstration, with the suspect shouting "Allah Akbar" before being apprehended.

French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau criticized Algeria's lack of cooperation and called for a tougher stance in diplomatic relations.

President Emmanuel Macron condemned the act as "Islamist terrorism," while the national anti-terrorism prosecutor has taken over the investigation.
