Left-wing Alliance Leads in French Legislative Elections

Published: 2024-07-07

In a surprising turn of events, the New Popular Front (NFP), a left-wing alliance, has emerged as the frontrunner in France's legislative elections.

Projections suggest the NFP could secure between 172 and 192 seats in the National Assembly, surpassing both President Macron's coalition and the far-right.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon, a key figure in the alliance, hailed the results as a 'magnificent civic mobilization' and called on Macron to invite the NFP to form a government.

However, the NFP falls short of an absolute majority, which requires 289 seats.

This outcome could lead to political uncertainty, with Mélenchon suggesting Macron should step down if no majority emerges.

The results mark a significant shift in France's political landscape, potentially challenging Macron's presidency.
