A massive rockfall on the RN90 in Savoie has caused significant travel disruptions for those heading to the Tarentaise ski resorts.
The incident, which occurred Saturday, left a 10-kilometer traffic jam and forced 1,500 stranded motorists to seek emergency shelter in nearby towns.
Authorities have rerouted traffic through a tunnel, typically reserved for descending vehicles, now operating in both directions.
Cleanup and safety assessments are underway, but normal traffic flow is not expected for several days.
The rockfall, described as "exceptional" due to the size and weight of the debris, has made travel to popular ski destinations like Tignes and Val d’Isère a multi-hour ordeal.
Geologists are set to deliver a report midweek, while efforts to improve traffic flow continue.
