Storms Disrupt Provence Landing Anniversary

Published: 2024-08-15

The 80th anniversary of the Provence landings, a pivotal yet lesser-known event in the liberation of France during World War II, faced significant disruptions due to severe weather conditions.

Originally planned to include a historical reenactment and a reception aboard the amphibious helicopter carrier Dixmude, these events were canceled as violent storms hit the southeastern coast of France.

Despite the weather, a ceremony at the Boulouris-sur-Mer necropolis proceeded, where French President Emmanuel Macron and several African leaders paid tribute to the soldiers, particularly those from former French colonies, who played a crucial role in the liberation efforts.

The event highlighted the contributions of African troops, with President Macron awarding the Legion of Honor to six veterans.

The adverse weather, marked by heavy rain and strong winds, underscored the challenges of commemorating historical events amidst unpredictable natural conditions.
